Preventing Prostate Cancer and How Proton Therapy Can Help

prostate cancer treatmentProstate cancer treatment has come a long way over the years. Prostate cancer specialists now implement proton treatment to combat many types of cancer. To date, more than 64,000 people have received proton therapy worldwide and 31,000 people have been treated in the United States.

Proton therapy for prostate cancer is relatively painless and is one of the less invasive prostate cancer treatments. According to Cancer Today, prostate cancer treatment has been shown to reduce negative side effects like bowel or urinary incontinence, painful urination, and painful bowel movements.

“Protons, by their nature, always do a better job of minimizing side effects because they always treat less tissue,” said Carl Rossi, radiation oncologist.

“I think it’s a fantastic technology, and in a couple of years it will be great,” said Mary Feng, a radiation oncologist at the University of Michigan Health System.

Health Line reports that there are numerous ways to at least combat prostate cancer and do as much as you can toprevent cancer.

By Eating Red Vegetables

Eating watermelon, tomatoes, and other red vegetables can help prevent prostate cancer in men. These foods contain a strong antioxidant called lycopene, which is an antioxidant that has been found to lower the risk of prostate cancer. Keep in mind that the redder the vegetable, the stronger the lycopene accumulations. In addition to increasing the amount of lycopene, eating vegetables also will provide you with other nutrients that help combat carcinogens that cause cancer.

Caffeine Can Help As Well

Drinking around five cups of coffee a day can actually lower your chance of high-grade prostate cancer. The chemicals cafestol and kahweol have plenty of cancer-fighting attributes. Although some researchers believe that running coffee though a normal paper filter can actually contain the cancer-fighting chemicals, so boiled coffee can actually fight prostate cancer even more.

Stop Smoking!

Obviously smoking is never a healthy habit and can lead to all kinds of medical issues, and people who smoke are much more likely to have an aggressive form of prostate cancer. You should quit as soon as possible, because prostate cancer patients who stopped smoking for more than 10 years have the same morality risk as people who never picked up a cigarette.
