Since its opening a year-and-a-half ago, Doctors Express Urgent Care has provided immediate medical services to patients in the Denver-Aurora Colorado area 365 days a year, and 12 hours a day. We sat down with the company’s practice manager, Alison Hare, to talk about the unexpected rewards of running a health care enterprise.
Ms. Hare, what would you say has been the biggest surprise about working in an urgent care center?
Our patients’ appreciation for caring for them! You practice medicine to take care of people, obviously, but our community’s appreciation for us makes all the trials and tribulations of owning a small business worth it. When a patient says that our practice was beautiful, clean, and they had an overall great experience with us, then we know we have hit a home run, and that’s our definition of success! We are also surprised at how many people in our local community don’t know about “urgent care” and how to utilize it in our current health care system.
That appreciation must be very rewarding for you. But what sorts of challenges have you faced in maintaining that kind of positive patient experience?
Time. There are never enough hours in the day, or days in the week. There is so much we want to do on the business front. We have big dreams and goals for the business, but we are a true American small business and we only have a small team handling the business side of things, so time is always of the essence for us as we try to grow our presence in the Colorado community.
Sounds busy. Does this hectic schedule ever make you want to close up shop and try something else instead?
We never wanted to give up. Everyone deserves access to quality health care and we believe in our purpose of providing affordable and accessible healthcare to our patients. We truly believe that it’s just a matter of time before our community realizes how we fit in the footprint and future of Denver, Colorado.
