The 3 Questions About FUE Hair Transplants You Need Answered

Eyebrow surgery for men

While there are numerous hair loss solutions being advertised on TV and in men’s magazines, hair implants for men are still the most effective and permanent solution available. In fact, of all the hair loss treatments offered today, hair transplant methods are the only true hair replacement options available. Hair transplants have been performed in U.S. for over 60 years, but more recent advancements make it even safer and more effective. Here’s what you should be asking about follicular unit extraction (FUE), the newest player in the hair transplant procedure game:

  1. What Is an FUE Procedure?

As in traditional hair transplants, FUE creates hair regrowth by transplanting active follicles from a donor site to a place on the scalp where hair growth has stopped. In the traditional procedure, called follicular unit transplantation, a strip of skin and follicles is harvested from the back of the head and then divided into numerous grafts. But in FUE, a tiny circular incision is made around individual follicles that are then grafted into the recipient site.

  2. What Are the Advantages of FUE?

The biggest upside of FUE is that instead of the strip scar left by a traditional transplant, the patient will have either no scarring or tiny, nearly invisible scars. This allows the patient to wear cropped or buzzed hairstyles. FUE also has a shorter recovery time and causes less discomfort for patients.

  3. What Are the Downsides of FUE?

Some patients have reported white, pit-like scarring at the donor sites. While every person’s body responds differently to surgery, this is one reason why it’s important to work with a skilled and reputable hair transplant surgeon who has extensive training and experience in this particular procedure. Most of the downsides of FUE aren’t health related; FUE is more expensive than traditional strip harvesting, and is a more time-consuming process.
