Throughout the ages, people have fervently — and to no avail — sought after the fountain of youth and have concocted all manner of deep wrinkle treatments in hopes of achieving a more youthful, radiant appearance. From horse urine — yes, this was actually used by some ancient civilizations — to gladiator sweet mixed with olive oil, both men and women have tried it all.
And then there were Botox treatments.
Injectables such Botox treatments and Juvederm are perhaps some of the most effective treatments used to ward off wrinkles. Botox works by “freezing” the facial muscles that cause wrinkles, which in turn creates a smoother, more youthful appearance. On the other hand, Juvederm works by restoring volume that is naturally lost over time due to aging.
Due to the quick — both procedures take roughly an hour or less to complete — and relatively painless nature of both Botox treatments and Juvederm, they’ve become extremely popular among both men and women. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), year after year, Botox takes the anti-wrinkle cake as the leading non-invasive cosmetic procedure performed.
It’s hard to believe that at one point, men would never even consider Botox and women wouldn’t dare openly admit to using it or “having work done”. Now, Botox, as well as other surgical and non-surgical procedures have become so mainstream that it’s common for people to host Botox parties. No even bats an eye at the thought, and not because they’re face is frozen.
However, while men and women are using Botox in record numbers — and at younger and younger ages as a preventative measure — they use it differently. Whereas women seek to eradicate all signs of wrinkles completely, men choose to use Botox in a way that’s been dubbed the “Wall Street Wrinkle”, wherein the purposefully choose to leave a few wrinkles for a more natural appearance.
So whether you choose to get rid of all your wrinkles or leave a little bit behind, Botox, along with other cosmetic anti-aging procedures, may just be the elusive fountain of youth people have been looking for for thousands of years.
