Physicians are subject to burnout. According to a few statistics, a recent study reported that 45.8% of physicians are considered to be experiencing at least one symptom of burnout. There is currently a 35.2% overall burnout rate among U.S. physicians. And physicians aged 35 and under have a burnout rate of 44%.

Students are also very stressed, specifically medical students but other students as well. A recent study showed that medical students report a rate of depression that’s 15% to 30% higher than the general population by a significant margin. The significant demands of the work required plus the stress could lead to a higher rate of the “depression.”

It is possible that students could also be more stressed because the pressurized environment that academics put them in. There is the drive to achieve more, to accomplish more, to handle all the tasks required to get into a good job or into a graduate school or further along in medical school. There are exams, homework, other jobs, financial support.

And of course there is making those student loans matter and not be saddled with a lower level job despite paying tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands for tuition to a school. Some schools may tout themselves on having a strong higher education framework but may struggle to deliver when it comes to jobs.

This along could lead to stress for college students.

However, the most likely culprit behind stress related burnout for college students is the multiple demands that the work culture puts on them to succeed. This means internships, exams, working a job, volunteering, and more. All these things force a person to acclimate to a competitive job market where more and more pressure is placed on students.

There are certain stress burnout symptoms to be concerned about. Lack of energy is typical of someone who is going through a lot of stress with a lot of responsibilities on their plate; however, crushing fatigue for days straight and the struggling ability to fight through the fatigue might be indicators of burnout.

Symptoms of being overtired might include sleeping for longs period of time, using tons of caffeine to stay awake, falling asleep at basic functions, such as driving to school or work, failing to exercise or take care of the person’s body, falling asleep in class or work, extreme levels of physical exhaustion and more.

Signs of physical exhaustion include slowness of movement, dullness of facial expressions, inability to move very far or feeling exhausted when doing so, lack of exercise if the person has been an exerciser, need five or six cups of coffee to stay awake, and more.

Life burnout and job burnout may involve different characteristics than student burnout. While a student undergoes burnout from the mass of responsibilities on their plates and the stress involved in the environment, life burnout and job burnout involve different issues to be considered.

Job burnout may involve all the symptoms of burnout, such as lethargy, lack of motivation, quickness to frustration, lack of concentration, inability to move effectively, but also involve certain work characteristics that may or may not be found in a student environment. For instance, a job requires many things that student’s haven’t experienced.

A job requires someone to work in the same place for a long time with a particular group. That group can be formed full of difficult people or easy people. There may be office politics involved. There may be too many responsibilities to handle. The grind of the 9 to 5 may be detrimental to health.
