Fine Lines or Wrinkles? Botox is Not Always the Solution

Aging skin treatment

Fine lines and wrinkles are an inevitable part of getting older. While they pose no medical threat, many people don’t like the look of wrinkles and seek the help of a cosmetic doctor to help them get rid of these signs of aging. There was a 6% increase in minimally invasive cosmetic procedures in the United States between 2012 and 2013, and the number of patients seeking Botox rose 8% in that time. When people initially consult their doctor about facial lines, they tend to think that Botox cosmetics is the obvious fix. What many don’t realize, however, is that there are other aging skin treatments that may be more appropriate depending on the wrinkles you are trying to get rid of.
Facial fillers are another type of cosmetic procedure that can fill in facial imperfections. Between 2012 and 2013, there were 2 million soft tissue filler treatments, and one of the most commonly used are Juvederm injections. Facial fillers like Juvederm differ from Botox because they act on established wrinkles. Fillers not only fill in lines, but they can also add fullness to areas that have lost volume with age. Lips, for example are one area that is commonly treated with Juvederm injections to create a fuller look.
Alternatively, Botox works on active wrinkles, like those in the forehead that are formed when you frown, or the wrinkles that come with a smile. Like Juvederm and other facial fillers, Botox is an injectable medicine. Cosmetic physicians inject Botox into problem areas in a procedure that takes about a half hour and needs to be repeated every four to six months.
While Botox and fillers like Juvederm are both treatments for fine lines and wrinkles, they treat different types. If you want to get rid of facial lines caused by aging, don’t just assume that Botox is the answer. Be sure to consult your doctor to see which solution is right for you.
